Too many times, I’ve watched people turn into complete idiots during interviews when asked what salary they are targeting.
The worse possible answers are as follows:
- I don’t know
- Something competitive
- Market salary
- What do you have budged?
- How much does the position pay?
The best possible ways to answer the question, “What salary are you targeting”?
- I am seeking a salary of “X”
- In my current role, I earn “X” and am targeting a salary of “X”
Bottom line…you know what you are seeking when you start your job search. There is no reason to be coy or standoffish when asked what salary you are seeking. When you choose not to answer the question, it makes you look like a poor communicator, shifty, not very confident (or over confident), and most likely someone the person who is conducting the interview, wouldn’t be comfortable working with. Remember, people hire (or make recommendations to hire) people they like.
